When Stella and her younger brother, Tom, move to their new London home, they become mystified by the disappearances of Harry, their elderly neighbour's dog。 Where does he go? And why does he keep reappearing wet-through?

Their quest to solve the riddle over the summer holidays soon leads to a boat buried under a grassy mound - and a tunnel that takes them to a secret lake。

Who is the boy rowing towards them? Why is he so terrified? And whose are those children's voices carried on the wind from beyond the woods?

This was a really sweet story, I liked the adventure although I wish it were longer。 I actually teared up a bit at the end。

And Jack didn’t steal from your family。 It was Crawley!’ Emma’s candle flickered violently again。 Then, very slowly, her eyes began to widen。 Emma opened her mouth and took the deepest of breaths while Stella, Tom and Jack all froze, waiting for her to scream。”― Karen Inglis, The Secret LakeSummary:tStella (11 years old) and Tom (8years old) are sibling that move from Hong Kong to Australia。 They moved to The Gardens and they had an apparent mole problem。 Charlie Green oversaw said moles and did not find amusing that Tom was snooping around the mole hills。 One day Tom saw Harry, Mrs。 Moon’s dog, that was always disappearing, and no one knew where。 Tom, intrigued with the dog’s disappearances, decides to get to the bottom of it。 Stella and Tom went to the Garden to follow Harry and found what would look like a boat, which was odd because there was no lake or river in sight。 The next morning, they heard Harry and decided to follow him again。 They went down a mole hill that Tom had been digging without Charlie Green noticing。 They kept descending through the hole and went through a tunnel and the light at the end was getting brighter。 Wondering where they were, they saw a lake and used the binoculars to spot a boy on a boat。 Around the same area, Stella thought she saw some moles, but Tom says that they only come out at night。 They kept walking around and heard two girls chattering, Emma and Sophie, and dressed very fancy with their mother。 They also found Harry and, finally, discovered where he was spending his time。 The girls were having a lesson because they wanted to get ahead on society。 Stella and Tom saw their own house in the distance, but Emma and Sophie said that it was their house。 Stella decided to head back home while wondering if they had traveled to the past。Connections:tWe all know how children can be curious and get themselves into a lot of trouble。 That sense of curiosity got our protagonist into an amazing adventure that can only be described as fantastic。 I can identify with the character of Tom because I understand the meaning of doing a good deed。 Trying to find Mrs。 Moon’s dog was helpful。 More than that it would be an amazing adventure to embark on。 Some people, such as adults, would see that as mischief, but we all know that that sense of heroism and hunger of adventure is what drives us to be better and to unforgettable experiences。 。。。more

Incredible!I just finished reading this book out loud to my son。 I didn't like how the children referred to each other as stupid and idiots in the beginning but am so glad I kept reading anyway。 This is one of my favorite time traveling books and it had me crying。 Well done! I read this with my 8yo。 It's novella sort of length but it's a lovely time travel story exploring the theme of friendships old and new, with a heartwarming little twist at the end。 Easy enough for a child to read on their own too! The language was not digestible for my son and it was awkward to try to read aloud to him。 That got in the way of what could have been a fun adventure in mystery。

This was an enjoyable chapter book that students should find very exciting。 This was not a hard book to read and would be perfect for students starting in about 4th grade。 I enjoyed the mystery of where the children went and the idea of going back in time。 This book was a reasonable length, especially for a student who may not lean towards chapter books。 I really enjoyed this book and the journey it took me on!

Personally, it was very hard to read this book。 I found it boring and confusing。 I don’t think that the author did a good job of explaining what was happening。 Also, I just didn’t understand why instead of using quotation marks, the author used apostrophes。 That was just a little weird to me。

This mystery novel is recommended for grades 4-7, with a theme of friendship and loyalty。 It starts with 2 friends who go looking for their neighbors missing dog and find a time tunnel that leads to a secret lake。 The meet new people and create both friends and enemies, good story! I wouldn't recommend for a unit read, but for a workshop it world be perfect。 This mystery novel is recommended for grades 4-7, with a theme of friendship and loyalty。 It starts with 2 friends who go looking for their neighbors missing dog and find a time tunnel that leads to a secret lake。 The meet new people and create both friends and enemies, good story! I thought this was pretty good。 It was imaginative and a nice introduction to the concept of time travel for children aged about 10。 But the writing is workmanlike and it never totally comes alive。

I read this for my daughter's book project and it was actually really good。 We were supposed to read a mystery book but it ended up being about time travel and not so much a mystery。 However, I enjoyed it and thought it was well written for children。 I read this for my daughter's book project and it was actually really good。 We were supposed to read a mystery book but it ended up being about time travel and not so much a mystery。 However, I enjoyed it and thought it was well written for children。 。。。more

A short, fun filled read that kept me interested from start to finish。 A lovely plot that sticks together with some great twists and turns。

Loved the sweet, timeless quality of this one—and the simple-but-effective time travel motif。 It's a bit clunky here and there, but the childish romp ambiance is something I see way too rarely these days。 Loved the sweet, timeless quality of this one—and the simple-but-effective time travel motif。 It's a bit clunky here and there, but the childish romp ambiance is something I see way too rarely these days。 。。。more

I downloaded this as a free Prime Reading book while looking for something different to read out loud to my six year old。 She didn't get hooked fast enough (not much of a criticism, she's SOOO unpredictable in her taste in longer books - she won't even let me START Charlotte's Web), but I was enjoying it, so I kept reading - and kept enjoying! I would recommend it to readers young and old, and was actually disappointed to find it wasn't a series。 I was really looking forward to continued adventu I downloaded this as a free Prime Reading book while looking for something different to read out loud to my six year old。 She didn't get hooked fast enough (not much of a criticism, she's SOOO unpredictable in her taste in longer books - she won't even let me START Charlotte's Web), but I was enjoying it, so I kept reading - and kept enjoying! Very nice children's fantasy story, about a pair of siblings who find a hole in their garden that allows them to travel to the past。 It is well-written and feels like a classic children's story, even though it's a recent book。 It was perhaps a bit too short, so the story could have been developed more if it had been longer。 Quite nice in any case。 Very nice children's fantasy story, about a pair of siblings who find a hole in their garden that allows them to travel to the past。 It is well-written and feels like a classic children's story, even though it's a recent book。 It was perhaps a bit too short, so the story could have been developed more if it had been longer。 Quite nice in any case。 。。。more
